Harbin is the capital city of Heilongjiang province. It lies in the northeast of China. It's the political,ecconomic and cultural center of Heilongjiang. The summer here is short and cool but the winter here is long and very cold. Every year, there is an ice and snow festival. People from all over China and foreign guests from other parts of the world come here to celebrate the festival. The sun island is the most attractive place of interest. We often go there to relax ourselves. The city is historical and modern. It has many building of Russian style and many modern buildings too. I think the city will be better in the future.

INTRODUCTION TO HARBIN

Ladies and gentlemen:

During your visit to Harbin, we will work together to make your stay a pleasant one. I've been told that all of you come from Australia. It must be a great change to find yourselves in the "City of Ice" in the deep winter. However, our city is not as cold as you expected. As you can see it is not cold when you sit in this coach, eat in restaurants and sleep in your rooms. If you are well dressed up with proper clothing and coats, you feel very comfortable when you attend various outdoor activities, and even when you go and visit our ice sculpture show in the evening. So stay with me, and do as the Harbinese do, and you will enjoy your stay here.

Now we have just left the airport.The airport is about 40 kilometers from downtown. I'd like to take this opportunity to give you an introduction to Harbin. Harbin is situated at 125 degrees east longitude and 46 degrees north latitude in the southern part of Heilongjiang Province. It is the capital of the province and governs seven districts and twelve counties. It covers an area of 53,166 square kilometers with a population of 9.56 million. Therefore it boasts the largest area among the capital cities of China. However, its urban proper covers an area of 1,637 square kilometers with a population of 3.35 million residents.

Harbin has a temperate monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. In summer, the highest temperature can reach over 30 degrees centigrade. In winter, the lowest temperature can drop down to 30 degrees below zero.

However, usually during daytime it is around 10 degrees below zero. Today it is 15 degrees below and it is considered one of the coldest days this winter. But don't wont', when we feel too cold, we can go inside any teahouse to drink some hot tea. Anyway, you will be safe with me.

Now 1'd like to tell you a bit of history about Harbin. Harbin is young and old. Excavations reveal that 20,000 years ago in the Paleolithic Age, our ancestors began to live on this land. By the end of the 10th Century the Nuzhen nationality, the ancestor of the Manchu nationality, had settled here. They named the area of their settlement "Alejin", meaning "Honor" or "Fame" in the Nuzhen language. After years of evolution, Harbin has got its present name. However, Harbin, as a city, is very young. In 1896, the Russian Tzar forced the Qing government to sign an unequal agreement that allowed Russians to build a railway in Northeast China. This railway called China Eastern Railway linked to the Tmns-Siberia Railway in Russia. Harbin was chosen as the head-office. Starting from then, Harbin developed into a modem city. By the 1920s, Harbin had become the biggest financial and trading center in Northeast China. There were sixteen foreign consulates and hundreds of foreign establishments in Harbin. At a time when the population of Harbin was about half a million, foreign residents accounted for almost one third. You will soon find out that there are a lot of foreign influences left in Harbin.

We are now still in the suburban area of Harbin. This area provides the city with vegetables, meat and poultry, etc. Green houses can produce fresh vegetables even in deep winter.

Harbin is an industrial city. It is one of China's major industrial bases. In the past forty ears, Harbin has established a comprehensive and wide-ranging industrial system with mechanical and electrical industries as its mainstay. There are over 6,000 industrial enterprises in industries of petrol chemistry, automobile, foodstuff, textile, building materials, etc. Harbin is famed for its "Home of Power", which is derived from the three big plants: Harbin Electric Machinery plant, Harbin Boiler Plant and Harbin Steam Turbine Plant. They work together to turn out complete sets of equipment for power plants. So far equipment supplied by the these three plants has made up over one third of the country's total installed capacity. There are other industries famous in China. Harbin Linen Plant is the largest in Asia. Harbin also produces the best helicopters in China. Harbin Automobile Plant produces minivans that are very popular in China.

Harbin is a famous tourist destination. In 1998, it was selected as China's best Tourist city with 53 other cities in China's first accreditation. Harbin claims to be best in summer and winter. The weather in summer is nice. It is not too hot as compared with that in other tourist cities in China. The Songhua River is 2,309 kilometers long, the second longest river in Heilongjiang Province. It runs across the city and adds to its beauty. Sun Island with natural habitats and a number of artificial features such as a lake and parks is Harbin's biggest tourist attraction. While in winter, Harbin Ice and Snow Festival draws over a million visitors from home and abroad. There are other attractions including the Children's Park, Stalin Park, the Provincial Museum, and so on. Besides, Yabuli Ski Arena is about 200 kilometers east of Harbin. The Third Asian Winter Games was held there in 1996. It is China's best ski resort. Ladies and gentlemen, we are now approaching our hotel. You are going to stay in the Swan Hotel. It is a three-star hotel, one of the best tourist hotels in Harbin. Apart from very good accommodation, there are a variety of recreational facilities, such as a swimming pool, a bowling alley, and Karaoke room ~. I hope all of you will have a pleasant stay here.
