美国30年代初期，密西西比州一座荒野的监狱里，一群犯人成天干着繁重的采石、碎石的活计。油嘴滑舌的犯人艾弗瑞特不想把时间浪费在石头上，整天打着逃跑的主意。他成功说服头脑简单的德尔玛和贼大胆的皮特之后，艾弗瑞特的越狱大计终于得以实现，三个穿着犯人服、拖着手铐、脚镣的罪犯叮叮当当地踏上了通往自由和宝藏的路途。
一路上，艾弗瑞特他们不仅要对付各种各样令人棘手的突发事件，还要与追捕他们的执法官库利斗智斗勇，库利是个狡诈、神秘的家伙，他锲而不舍地要把三名越狱犯送回监狱。
逃亡的过程中，艾弗瑞特他们还遇到了形形色色的人：赶往杰克逊参加电台演出的老音乐家托米；道德败坏的《圣经》推销员——独眼龙大丹；声明狼籍的强盗 “娃娃脸尼尔森”；正在参加竞选的地方官派比；以及曾经和艾弗瑞特关系暧昧的女人潘妮……究竟三位越狱者能否到达他们的目的地呢？
