古者民泽处复穴，冬日则不胜霜雪雾露，夏日则不胜暑热??虻。圣人乃作为之筑土构木，以为宫室，上栋下宇，以蔽风雨，以避寒暑，而百姓安之。伯余之初作衣也，緂麻索缕，手经指挂，其成犹网罗。後世为之机杼胜复以便其用，而民得以揜形御寒。古者剡耜而耕，摩蜃而耨，木钩而樵，抱甀而汲，民劳而利薄。後世为之耒耜耰鉏，斧柯而樵，桔皋而汲，民逸而利多焉。古者大川名谷，冲绝道路，不通往来也，乃为窬木方版，以为舟航，故地势有无得相委输，乃为靻蹻而超千里，肩荷负儋之勤也，而作为之楺轮建舆，驾马服牛，民以致远而不劳。为鷙禽猛兽之害伤人而无以禁御也，而作为之铸金锻铁，以为兵刃，猛兽不能为害。故民迫其难则求其便，困其患则造其备，人各以其所知，去其所害，就其所利。常故不可循，器械不可因也，则先王之法度有移易者矣。

{古代的人民，住在水草地上或者山洞里面，冬天不能抵抗霜雪雾露，夏天不能抵抗暑热蚊虻。圣人筑土架木，造成房屋，上面栋梁下面椽子，可以遮蔽风雨，躲避寒暑，人民就安乐了。一开始 伯余 做衣服的时候，只是劈开麻皮搓成麻线，用手把横线和竖线编起来，做出来的布就像现在的渔网一样。后来有了织布机和织梭适合生产，人民才可以遮掩身体抵抗寒冷。古代用削尖的木棍耕田，用磨薄的蚌壳耘草，用带杈的树枝打柴，用瓦罐来从井里面打水，花了很多的劳力但收获却不大。后来做出了耒耜耰鉏等农具，用斧子砍柴，用轱辘来从井里面打水，人可以安逸地得到更多收获。古代因为被大河深溪隔断了道路，不能互相往来，就把大树挖空做成舟，后来又把木板拼成船，才能在水上航行。古时候运输物资，只能把货物挑在肩上，驮在背上，穿着草鞋皮靴走几千里的远路。后来把木头弯成轮子做成车子，驯服了牛马拉车，人才可以去到很远的地方而不劳累。因为凶禽猛兽经常害人而无法防御，就锻铜炼铁，做成兵刃，就不再被猛兽伤害。所以人被困难所迫就会寻找便利的方法，被祸患的困扰就制造完备的器具，人都能凭借自己的知识来避免祸害，趋附利益。不能死守常法陈规，不能顽固的沿用破旧的器械，所以先王的法度也是可以改变的。}
